Wolfgang gazes across Turtle Lake in his enclosure at Wolf Park in Battleground, Indiana.  He was the alpha male of his pack but was regularly tested by his brother Wotan.  At the time this was taken, Wolfgang was 5 years old and had only recently driven Tristan, the alpha before him, from the pack.

My relationship with Wolfgang was one best entertained from a distance.  He greeted me on occasion during early trips to the park but as he aged he became less welcoming to this traveler who only visits every few years.  His brother, however, warmly welcomes me each time I’m there.  What Wolfgang lacks in kisses he makes up for through his ability to strike a pose.

Wolf Park is an educational facility which focuses on the conservation of this great species. The animals are socialised and can be seen exhibiting natural behaviours in captivity.
